Michael Mayhew joined The Cleveland Orchestra as associate principal horn at the beginning of the 1997-98 season. Before joining the Orchestra, he served as assistant principal horn of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra and had been appointed principal horn there for the 1997-98 season. Earlier, he was a member of Miami’s New World Symphony and performed as substitute horn with the Houston Symphony and with the Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera orchestras.

A native of Denton, Texas, Michael Mayhew holds a bachelor of music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and a master of music degree from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston. He has participated in the summer Kent/Blossom Music program. Mr. Mayhew’s teachers have included Robert Fries, William Ver Meulen, and Richard Solis, who is now his colleague in the horn section of The Cleveland Orchestra.
