International Tours
An extensive touring schedule was part of each season from early in the ensemble's history, with The Cleveland Orchestra's first performance at Carnegie Hall coming in 1922. Additional milestones followed, including their first "overseas" tour to Cuba in 1927 and first European tour in 1957. Since that time, they have performed repeatedly at Europe's most prestigious halls and festivals, visited South America and Australia, and returned at regular intervals to Asia.
Over the past dozen years, building on its worldwide artistic reputation, The Cleveland Orchestra has developed a new model to dovetail with its ongoing touring schedule. A series of long-term residency partnerships have been developed in great international cities, giving the Orchestra new and ongoing relationships with a wider audeince of symphonic music lovers. In Miami, New York,and Vienna, Cleveland has active and growing initiatives based on the Orchestra’s reputation for excellence in performance and music education.
Collaboration with a community, its arts and cultural institutions, and its schools are at the heart of this residency partnership model. Crafted around artistically preeminent concerts, Cleveland Orchestra residencies feature proven programs in audience development, musician training, community engagement, and music education. Cleveland’s consummate professionals teach the young musicians who will build tomorrow’s great orchestras and dedicate family concerts to building the world’s future audiences.
The Cleveland Orchestra believes that music should play a significant role in the development and enrichment of society. Cleveland’s music director, Franz Welser-Möst, has set the stage with his artistic passion, his philosophy about music and its role in education, and his engaged leadership style. Along with the Orchestra's leadership in Northeast Ohio, he is building The Cleveland Orchestra’s future at home, nationally, and internationally by defining a unique role for the Orchestra in the global context of the 21st century.
Cleveland Orchestra Residencies
Miami
The Cleveland Orchestra serves thousands adults and young people in the Miami-Dade community through a variety of concerts and community engagement activities including school programs and coaching with university students. The Orchestra performs concerts each year at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County.
Vienna
The Orchestra’s residency at the famed Musikverein (home of the Vienna Philharmonic) is the first of its kind by an American orchestra. The Orchestra held its sixth Musikverein residency in the autumn of 2013 as part of a xx-concert European Tour, and returns for more concerts in 2014.
New York
Since the 1920s, The Cleveland Orchestra has returned regularly to New York City, to perform unique concerts at venues including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.
Lucerne Festival
An ongoing biennial residency at Lucerne's international festival in Switzerland, has featured Roche Commissions — a project involving the Orchestra, the Festival, and Carnegie Hall.
